Gradius+
A downloadable game for Windows, macOS, and Linux
Submitted to #DecadeJam
I made rocketgame a few years ago, and it's been sitting, unfinished, since. Just decided I'd update it to show how far I've come.
Rocketgame is the original. Zero sound, all your lasers are full-auto, and there's no set beginning and ending. As soon as you're past the second boss, it's basically impossible.
Gradius+ is the updated version. It has better progression, sound, player feedback, controller support, and screen filters. Also it's in full screen mode.
CONTROLS;
Spacebar to shoot
Arrow keys to move
Esc to quit game
GRADIUS+ ONLY WITH CONTROLLER;
A,B,X,Y/Circle, Square, Triangle, X buttons to shoot.
Left stick to move
Still Esc to quit

Thanks for downloading!
If you want Gradius+ make sure that's the file name! Rocketgame is an old prototype that I uploaded to show how far I've come as a dev. If you want the game shown in the thumbnail make sure you are downloading Gradius+.

So I might be a bit of an idiot... I downloaded the "rocketgame" file for windows...not Gradius+, and I didn't even notice. So I came back just now and saw that, and everything works great in Gradius+ LOL sorry for the confusion. I guess that's something to keep in mind for distribution to other people.
Just downloaded it and played it and I have a few suggestions: 1) It is tough to get underneath the enemies to shoot them without getting hit yourself, but if they shot slower or maybe moved left and right it would feel like skill more than timing and luck. Also, music or SFX would be awesome. And maybe name the "game" file in the .zip folder something that will stick to the top of the file explorer so players don't have to scroll through all the other ones before they get to the actual game file. Great start though! EDIT: I see you have notes for music in the description but I didn't hear anything when I played.
The sound design for this game is actually something I put a lot of time into. What platform did you download it for?
I have plans to update the enemy movement as well as a few other things to make it feel more like Gradius and less like a knock-off Galaga.
I installed it for Windows. Let me try it again and see if it works. EDIT: Yeah that's weird. I don't hear anything.
Okay, thanks for the review! I'll look into this and fix the gameplay-related stuff when I have the time.
I think I know what went wrong. Just a packaging issue. Did you see anything else, maybe like this?
I never saw that, interesting.
